PE & Sport Premium – Our Vision and Commitment
At Westwoodside Church of England Academy, physical education, sport and active play are central to helping every child “be a light for other people” and to live out our school motto: Believe and Achieve – Learn and Grow.
We see PE and sport as far more than games on the playground; they are powerful tools for building confidence, resilience, teamwork, leadership and positive mental health. This reflects the national vision that all pupils should leave primary school physically literate and ready for a healthy, active life.
What we want for our pupils
Through high-quality PE, sport and physical activity, we want Westwoodside pupils to:
- Develop secure fundamental movement skills and physical literacy so they can participate confidently in a wide range of activities.
- Understand the importance of an active lifestyle for their physical and mental health.
- Experience teamwork, fair play, respect and perseverance in real, meaningful contexts.
- Discover activities they enjoy now and are likely to continue beyond primary school.
- Represent themselves and our school with pride, whether they are competing, leading or supporting others.
How we use our Sport Premium Funding
In line with DfE guidance, we focus our PE and Sport Premium spending on building long-term capacity and improving the quality of PE, School Sport and Physical Activity curriculum for all pupils, now and in the future.
We do this by prioritising the following areas:
Making every day active: We want all pupils to be active on most days, not only during timetabled PE lessons. At Westwoodside we -
- Active break and lunchtime provision, including structured games and leadership roles
- Opportunities for daily movement in the classroom and across the curriculum
- Initiatives that promote active travel and healthy lifestyle choices
Using PE and sport to drive whole-school improvement: PE and sport contribute to behaviour, attendance, wellbeing and academic outcomes. At Westwoodside we -
- Raise the profile of PE and sport through assemblies, celebration events and leadership opportunities
- Use physical activity to support pupils’ self-regulation, resilience and sense of belonging
- Align our PE and Sport Premium work with the wider school development plan and Christian vision
Broadening and deepening pupils’ experiences: We are committed to offering a broad and inclusive range of activities so that every child can find something they enjoy and can succeed in. At Westwoodside we -
- Introduce or extend less traditional activities (for example, fitness circuits, dance, outdoor adventurous activities or alternative games)
- Ensure equitable access for all groups of pupils, including those with SEND and those who may be less likely to take part in sport otherwise
Creating meaningful competitive and collaborative opportunities: Competition is one part of a much wider picture. We want pupils to experience both competing and collaborating in supportive environments. At Westwoodside we -
- Organise and attend intra- and inter-school festivals and competitions
- Provide opportunities for pupils to set and pursue personal bests, not just team results
- Support pupil leadership roles (such as sports leaders or play leaders) to help run events and activities
Strengthening staff expertise in PE: We invest in our staff to ensure they feel confident and skilled in teaching PE and leading physical activity. At Westwoodside we -
- Working alongside specialist PE coaches and teachers
- Access to high-quality schemes, resources and assessment tools
- Targeted CPD to support inclusive practice and adaptive teaching in PE
Working in Partnership: Westwoodside Church of England Academy is a proud member of the Get Ahead Partnership. Through this partnership, and alongside our Trust and local networks, we are able to -
- Enhance our PE curriculum and teaching
- Increase the range and quality of competition and festival opportunities
- Share expertise, ideas and resources across schools
- Promote healthy, active lifestyles for all pupils
